My mother has pretty much been my best friend for as long as I can remember.  Yes, we have our problems, but we never let them get out of control.  Mom is pretty much one of the only people I can truly count on, no matter what.  She has been by my side through all the fights, break ups, crushes, loves, good and bad moments.  She never complains when I need to ask her advice, and she's just basically an all-around great person.

When I felt like dropping out of high school, SHE was the one who convinced me to keep going.  Nothing anyone said to me was a good enough reason to stay, until Mom talked it through with me.  She made me realize that she would support me no matter what, but if I quit, I would regret it in a heartbeat.

She was also there when I decided that I wasn't going to continue college, because it just wasn't for me.  She never once yelled at me, or told me I was ruining my life by dropping out.  She just said "I'm so proud of you for getting this far in your life, and if you want to quit college, that's your choice. I'll support you no matter what."  I left college a week later, not because my mother said it was alright if I did, but because I didn't enjoy myself there.  And when her mother was yelling at me because she thought I was giving up my dreams, it was Mom who defended me and told Gramma to back off.

I am currently doing a course through correspondence, and it's going a lot better than college ever was.  Mom's the one who always makes sure I don't neglect my course, and that I get things done.

I realize now that I'm one of the lucky ones, because my mother wants to be a part of my life.  I know that there are some people out there whose mothers' could care less about them, and it breaks my heart to see that happening more and more.
